SEQ peri-urban land management

Achieving sustainable growth within South East Queensland is a major challenge for community, industry and governments, with an estimated 55,000 new residents each year. Identifying the key NRM issues in the region and the research and development required to understand their impacts is vital if SEQ is to sustain its' acknowledged reputation for liveability.

CIRM has first: A review of research and development for the management of peri-urban South East Queensland (Groedcki 2008) identified a large volume of relevant science being undertaken to address NRM issues for the SEQ region.

However, there are significant gaps in our knowledge. The top five research and development (R&D) priorities, identified by subsequent work by CIRM relate to:

  • social and economic benefits and costs of improved management practices; monitoring and evaluating the extent of effective adoption of improved management practices
  • fine scale mapping of projected land use change
  • assessing the impacts of land use on natural resources and agricultural industries
  • understanding the natural resource management-related values and aspirations of people living in peri-urban communities.

A total of fifty priority research and development needs requiring further investment have been identified for peri-urban SEQ. The report:Priority research and development needs for natural resource management in peri-urban South East Queensland (Grodecki, 2008) is available to download.
